Privacy Policy
Know Your Senator shows public government records. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics or tracking scripts, and no interest in who you are. This policy applies to the website and the mobile apps.
What we collect
Nothing that identifies you. There is no sign-up, no login, and no profile. We do not use cookies for tracking, fingerprinting, or third-party analytics of any kind.
The one thing you may type in
The “Find your reps” feature accepts a state, ZIP code, city, or street address. That query is sent to our server solely to resolve which districts it falls in; a full street address is relayed once to the public US Census Bureau geocoder for the district match. The query is used only for that lookup — it is not stored, logged, or shared beyond that single geocoding call.
Server logs & third-party services
Our hosting infrastructure keeps ordinary, short-lived technical logs (IP address, request path, status) for reliability and abuse prevention, as virtually all web hosting does. Data shown in the app is fetched from public sources — the FEC, congress.gov, the Clerk of the House, the Senate, the US Census, and OpenStates — via our server. Member photos load from public repositories. External links (official sites, FEC filings, vote.gov) take you to those organizations, whose own policies then apply.
On your device
The mobile app bundles its map data and caches pages on-device so the map works offline. That cache stays on your device and can be cleared by uninstalling the app or clearing its storage.
Optional: follow notifications (mobile app)
If you choose to follow a legislator, your device subscribes itself to that legislator's notification topic with your platform's push service (Google Firebase Cloud Messaging; Apple's push service on iOS). Those services process a device push token to deliver notifications — that token never reaches our servers, and we keep no record of who follows whom: the list of legislators you follow is stored only on your device. When new votes are published we send one message per legislator topic, addressed to the topic, not to you. Unfollow in the app or turn off notifications in your device settings at any time.
Optional: location lookup (mobile app)
“Use my location” asks for your device position only when you tap it, sends the coordinates to our server once to resolve your congressional district via the public US Census geocoder, and discards them — the same transient handling as a typed address. Location permission is never required; typing an address always works.
Children
The service shows civic information suitable for general audiences and collects no data from anyone, children included.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the new text will appear at this URL with the date below updated.
